E-Verify Yet to Gain Popularity

E-Verify, a free online service for public and private employers to instantly check the citizenship status of potential employees, is currently being used by only 2 percent of 7.4 million employers nationwide, a new survey suggests.

The program is administered by the Department of Homeland Security, but many have viewed it as an unnecessary level of intrusion into private lives. Other E-Verify pejoratives include “stalkerish” and “Big Brother.” The American Civil Liberties Union has been a vocal opponent. Those arguing for more strict immigration policies generally support the program or something similar to it.
