CanTan Expo A Hit

More than 550 salon owners and employees attended the annual CanTan Sun Systems Tanning Expo in Canada this past January. Vendors—such as Devoted Creations, Supre, Fiesta Sun, MR International, Fiji Blend, Synergy Tan, Satori Sol, Ed Hardy Tanning, Cosmedico, Global Sun Light and Eye Pro—were in attendance to speak to the crowds and show off new products on the show floor.

Presentations by keynote speaker Jerry Deveney and Joe Schuster (both from JK North America) were highlights of the expo. Deveney presented his entertaining and educational "Success is a Choice" seminar, based upon more than 24 years of salon consulting experience. His $500 cash handouts and Powerball lottery-ticket drawings added to the dynamic presentation. Schuster was on-hand to introduce the Sun Angel, a technologically advanced tanning bed that virtually reduces overexposure by using a built-in sensor to analyze each client's skin type and create a personalized 20-minute session.

Denise Tremblay, publisher of Tanning, Beauty and Well-Being magazine, also attended the event with Can Tan President Frank Ingham. As directors of the Joint Canadian Tanning Association (JCTA), they accepted donations from the crowd and suppliers. The JCTA also had a booth on the show floor, manned by spokesperson Steve Gilroy.

During the show, more than $20,000 in prizes were handed out and every attendee received free products worth more than $500. One lucky salon, TW Tanning Centre, won a new SunDash Pro 32-lamp tanning bed with a 120-watt face tanner valued at $6,995.

"There is no doubt that this was the largest event of its kind ever held in Canada," says Jennifer Dunn, sales manager for Can Tan. “We may just have to find a larger venue for next year's event.”
