Best Biz Books of the Year

12/25/2009

Hindsight is 20/20, as they say, and 2009’s best business books – created by Fast Company – highlight all that lead up to the recession, and how we can keep it from happening again. The books listed here offer stories of inspiration, innovation and fascination.

Adland: Searching for the Meaning of Life on a Branded Planet by James Othmer: Surprisingly fresh and revealing, this book guides readers through the treacherous and monotonous advertising industry. Based on “war stories” from someone on the inside, Othmer also looks ahead to the innovations to come in advertising.

In-N-Out Burger: A Behind the Counter Look at a Fast-Food Chain That Breaks All the Rules by Stacy Perman: It’s perhaps not so hard to believe that in this day and age, a company that a “values-based company” that focuses on slow growth and quality is one that breaks all the rules. But In-N-Out has the fan base and success story to prove its style really works.

In Cheap We Trust: The Story of a Misunderstood Virtue by Lauren Weber: This book covers the conflicting feelings Americans have about frugality.

Bright-Sided by Barbara Ehrenreich: Not for the easily dampened. This book outlines how tritely concocted positive thinking breeds a messy economy. As Ehrenreich puts forth, blind and persistent positivity strips people of their ability and willingness to ask the tough questions.
