AAD Says: Supplements, Not Sun, For Vitamin D

01/05/2009

Many people are wondering now more than ever about how to safely get enough vitamin D. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recently weighed in on the issue, advising the use of supplements rather than sun to boost vitamin D levels.

In a public statement, the AAD acknowledged the growing body of evidence supporting the health benefits of vitamin D and the fact that people who live in northern latitudes, have dark skin, use sunscreen or cover up when outdoors tend to have low levels of the nutrient. However, the AAD stated that it recommends people stimulate vitamin D levels by using nutritional sources and dietary supplements—not from unprotected exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun or indoor-tanning devices.
