Security Cameras … Yes, You Need Them

Two recent incidents in one of our salons brought the topic of security cameras to the forefront of our minds—and it is the impetus for contributing this blog. We experienced two shoplifting incidents within two weeks of each other; thankfully, we were able to review video-surveillance footage from the lobby cameras and, therefore, were able to identify the thieves and address these incidents.

We are in the midst of busy season, which means it is easier than ever for would-be thieves to rob unsuspecting salon owners. An extremely attentive staff is, of course, your first line of defense. In fact, the incidents mentioned above may not have been identified without the help of our great staff—it was only after the employees tipped us off that we were able to go back to the footage to confirm their initial beliefs of theft.

However, staff members are often busy selling packages, inputting times for tanning equipment, cleaning the units, etc.—and that is more than enough distraction for even amateur thieves to succeed. Trust me when I say that if someone gets away with it once, they will do it again. That’s why you need a second line of defense—a security system.

Often, business owners feel they can’t afford to install a surveillance system. But, frankly, we are proof that you can’t afford not to!

Luke and Lori Golueke are the founders and operators of Aruba Tanning. Originally from the video-rental industry, they decided to jump into tanning head-first in 2002 because they viewed the tanning industry as segmented and in need of more professional operators. Today, they operate two salons in Maryland—one in Abingdon and one in Cockeysville—that feature more than more 45 pieces of equipment from Ergoline and Mystic Tan, as well as Norvell airbrushing and a 1,500-square-foot spa area devoted to massage. They are in the process of offering franchise opportunities to expand the reach of the Aruba Tanning brand, which is the first and only franchise to offer a store-in-a-store concept (tanning and massage services) under the same roof. Franchise locations will be operated under the Aruba Sun and Spa trademarks.
