Friend or Foe? Spray Tan Van Makes the Rounds
A British beautician is taking mobile spray tan to a new level – converting a van into an extreme mobile airbrush studio. 30-something Sarah Keenan invested £18,000 into her wheeled wonderland – a heated van equipped with a couch, music and magazines, along with a private cube for the spray tan. The 15- minute service costs around £25. (The British Pound averaged around $1.54 U.S. at press time.)
Keenan frequents English business districts, especially during the lunch hours, to bring tanning to busy professionals. She also offers special-event tanning for weddings and private parties.
She admits that although the van was an investment, it’s nothing compared to the overhead costs of running an actual salon.
Many UV salon owners here in the states have taken issue with strictly mobile practitioners for this very reason (among others). Certainly nobody wants to see the professionalism of the tanning industry compromised via an influx of untrained trunk slammers. However, at least Keenan’s business model shows a concentrated – and more costly – effort to provide a unique service in a customized environment.
What do you think – does Keenan’s spray tan van help or hurt indoor tanning’s image? Have you heard of any similar operations in the U.S.? Leave your comments below.
