Gen Y – Lazy and Over-privileged?

I recently read a business blog from Alanna Peterkin, the founder of Head Games Salon, in which she shared her frustration about trying to find “good” employees in the 18-25 age range, also known as “Generation Y.” In her opinion, the problem is so serious, she says, “I think we may just have a whole generation of people on unemployment, because there’s nothing that seems to inspire them to work.”

In the article, she shares several examples of “red flag” moments she’s had with employees – or potential hires. She notes that in her experience, the majority of Gen Y employees don’t seem to want to work hard or do the “dirty” jobs, such as cleaning the bathroom. Peterkin blames parents for the epidemic, suggesting they coddle the young up-and-comers to the point that they think everyone has a Gucci bag – while having no clue that things such as electricity cost money.

What do you think? Have you had good success with Gen Y salon workers? Do you see the same concerning traits that Peterkin mentions? And who or what’s to blame? Weigh in on the comment line below.
