Business Tips from Someone Who’s Been There
Peter Madden, founder and president of marketing agency AgileCat, recently celebrated two milestones. First, he turned 40. And second, his company made it to (and past!) the 10-year mark. He points out that only 5 percent of new businesses typically survive their first decade.
He took the opportunity to share 20 lessons he’s gleaned from owning a small business. Most of them apply to owning a tanning salon, with a few being absolute gems. Here are some of my favorites:
• Find someone to handle what you’re weak in so you can focus on what your strengths are.
• It’s normal to be unduly stressed about your livelihood. Now get over it and do what you do best!
• An employee who respectfully disagrees with some of your ideas can be a valuable person to keep on staff.
• Seek to build professional mentoring relationships with local business leaders you respect and look up to. (Start by offering to take them to lunch!)
• Put as much thought and prep time into your staff meetings as you do trying to sell to customers.
• Always trust your instincts, even when they appear counterintuitive.
