Tanning Customer Videotaped … Under a Partition

A 30-year-old Illinois man is awaiting sentencing after he pled guilty to secretly videotaping a female tanning customer at a salon they were both patronizing. My question is: How is this still happening? And what’s worse – in this case, the man was able to put a video camera underneath the partition that separated his room from the victim’s. So much so, that she could even see his hand, holding the device.

As salon professionals, it’s crucial to create an environment where customers can rest assured there is no blatant opportunity for indiscretion regarding their privacy. That applies to their physical comfort, the protection of their personal information in the salon’s records, and even the conversations the staff has with them.

If you haven’t recently, take some time to make sure your salon has these areas covered. In addition, review your insurance policy – and call your agent if you’re not sure about your coverage. Although you can’t control a poor decision one of your customers or employees might make, you can take preventive measures to decrease the likelihood of it happening, as well as making sure you’ve got some type of coverage in place.

The man involved in this case committed a Class 4 felony, and could face up to three years in prison. No doubt, the negative effects of the incident will linger on for the salon at least that long – if it survives at all.
