Swine Flu And Salon Sanitation

As of Tuesday evening, the World Health Organization has confirmed at least 104 cases of swine flu worldwide, including 64 in the United States; 26 in Mexico; six in Canada; three in New Zealand; two each in Spain and the United Kingdom; and one in Israel. Everyone must do their part to help prevent the spread of the flu, which is resistant to conventional antibiotics. That means that now is a good time to review salon sanitation procedures.

In a thread on TanToday.com, the American Tanning Institute (ATI) notes that routine salon cleaning procedures using EPA-approved sanitation products will help ensure clients and staff stay safe. ATI also reminds salons to:

• Clean all tanning equipment after each and every use with an EPA-approved sanitizer that is mixed according to the directions stated on the container. Be sure to focus on areas that come in contact with consumers, such as pillows, handles and acrylic surfaces.
• Sanitize all protective eyewear prior to use using a product that is appropriate for eyewear and mixed according to the manufacturer's instructions. Don’t forget that straps must also be sanitized.
• Make sure staff members are washing their hands with an EPA-approved hand sanitizer frequently and especially after cleaning. Hand-washing is the best way to avoid the flu as well as MRSA skin infections.
