While laying off employees is tough, facing the remaining employees can be just as hard. Patrick Sweeney, president of international management firm Caliper, offers tips and suggestions for managers and owners looking for the right words to say to calm fears and decrease any resentment of their shrinking staff.

Remind them that the layoff or layoffs were not indicative of the employees’ performance, or a reflection of the business’ state of affairs—it’s simply a sign of the troubling economic times.

Don’t just spread the work of the laid off employees among the survivors—in essence, ask everyone to just “do more.” Restructure all job descriptions and expectations to those most fitted to handle the specific workload.
