The details: XpresSmile is targeting the tanning industry with two complementary teeth-whitening options: a self-administered kit for use while tanning and an LED whitening system. The Sun Tan Kit—which gradually whitens teeth each time it is used—is great for maintenance after an LED treatment and is also an affordable option for customers on a budget. The LED system offers customers fast, deep whitening in under an hour using a strong-but-gentle hydrogen peroxide gel activated by a cool LED light to accelerate the oxidation process that removes stains from teeth.

XpresSmile is very similar to dental whitening systems in quantity, results and strength but simplified for use at a salon. The dental-grade lights and USA-made gels are FDA- and CE –certified, and gels are shipped in special packaging to ensure purity and freshness. The system can be purchased in a complete turn-key package that includes legal, marketing, insurance and business consultation.

The benefits: XpresSmile’s system is simple, yet powerful and uses the strongest whitening gel available to salons. Users’ teeth are generally four to ten shades lighter after one treatment. And, unlike at the dentist, there is little-to-no sensitivity of the teeth and gums. The system is easy to use and requires low labor costs. Salons typically profit $150 or more per customer, which means the initial investment is paid off after 10 to 15 whitening sessions.

The reason it works for salons: “Teeth whitening is a very natural fit for salons—people who come in to tan care about how they look and feel,” says Ted Davis, owner of Framingham, Mass.-based The Solar System. “Offering teeth whitening is just another way you can help people look better and feel as though they are taking care of themselves.”

The thing that caught LF’s eye: The fact that XpresSmile is coming out with a special connection box that will allow salons to hook their LED whitening system to their T-Max—allowing staff to run the unit without having to send an attendant into the room with the user. In addition, this will allow salon owners to run reports—such as on frequency of use of the equipment—to fully monitor their ROI.

Case in point: Davis’ salon is large—he has around 30 rooms—and T-Max integration helps streamline use of the teeth-whitening system. He says it also makes it much easier for his staff to monitor time and use of thesystem, which in turn helps him see how the equipment is working for him and what session length is the most popular.
