British Teen Tan Ban Endorsed by Government Leader, Celebs

01/13/2010

The British Health Secretary and an alabaster skin-toned pop star recently appeared in Westminster at the launch of a Private Member’s Bill in the House of Commons. “Girls Aloud” singer Nicola Roberts stood by as Health Secretary Andy Burnham announced the government’s backing of legislation banning those under the age of 18 from using tanning beds.

The pop star was on hand to share her story of having felt pressure when she was younger to appear more tan. She is also reportedly making a documentary about indoor tanning and the ongoing pressure young people feel to tan indoors.

The bill was introduced by Cardiff North MP Julie Morgan and will be publicly announced again later this month at the House of Commons. Morgan is building a campaign to try to pushing the bill through prior to the general election later this year – and feels the government endorsement will help make it happen.

English-based group The Sunbed Association (TSA) is in favor of making unstaffed salons illegal; however, a spokesperson for the organization says she is unaware of research proving that 17- year-olds are at any more risk than 18-year-olds when it comes to UV exposure. In compliance with the European Standard and government guidelines, TSA does not endorse tanning for those younger than age 16.

Besides rallying for tanning salons to be regulated and licensed, the British Association of Dermatologists has also called for a ban on unmanned equipment.

Scotland has successfully enacted stringent tanning restrictions; Wales is not far behind. At this point, England is merely following suit. British tv soap opera star (and former teen tanner) Gemma Merna has also lent public support to the proposed legislation.
