Spring is giving way to summer, and alas, the number of days you can still claim to have completed a “spring cleaning” is dwindling, too. Steve Strauss is a lawyer, author and speaker who specializes in small business and entrepreneurship. He recommends a thorough spring cleaning plan for your entire business. This includes:
Online In today’s tech-savvy times, you can’t afford to have an outdated Web site. To draw in customers, your online spot should have interactive features and a current look and feel. You don’t have to break the bank to update your technology – just find a talented Gen Y-er who will likely do the work for cheap.
Innovation As summer business slows, use the downtime to work on something new, whether that’s a business Facebook account, a fall promo or introducing an upgraded system for any aspect of the salon.
Cleaning – Physical and Electronic Not only do the public areas of the salon need to be spotless, but you should take the opportunity to clean out the hidden spots, too – whether that’s the interior of a storage area, office or filing cabinet. Then consider aesthetic upgrades such as fixtures or paint.
This is also a great time to freshen up your computer. Software upgrades, data backups, file purges, e-mail maintenance and more should be part of the process.
Preparation Scope out the remainder of the year. What needs to get done? What’s urgent and what can wait? Get it in writing and then deadline yourself so things get done. (Don’t forget to schedule some R&R time for you – and teambuilding opportunities for your employees!)
Cleaning is a necessary evil – but don’t miss the accompanying opportunity to really delve deeply into your whole business ... finding new creative energy amidst all those dust bunnies.
