More Consumers Are Shopping This Season, But Spending Less

The numbers are out for this year’s Black Friday shopping turnout. Traditionally, the day after Thanksgiving is a time when major retailers and small businesses alike roll out smoking deals in the hopes of luring holiday shoppers into their stores to spend, spend, spend.

More shoppers turned out for this year’s event, but spent less per shopper on average. That means that overall spending compared to 2008’s Black Friday stayed about the same – the weekend totals were $41.2 billion for 2009, up just slightly from $41 billion in 2008.

For salon owners, this news is encouraging, as it reveals that more consumers are willing to get out and spend – if the price is right. About 200 million shoppers ventured out last weekend (up from about 140 million in 2008), and favored the lower-priced items. This could point to consumers trending toward spending only what monies they actually have in their bank accounts, and not depending on credit cards. Salons can respond to this trend by keeping plenty of lower price-point items available, and be ready to explain the quality these products still hold as compared to their higher-priced counterparts.
