Vitamin D – the production of which occurs in the human body thanks to sunlight exposure – continues to receive great press. Recent studies suggest vitamin D can be instrumental in assisting in cancer prevention and helping keep existing problems at bay.
Michael Holick, a physician and researcher with Boston University Medical Center, is adamant about the lifelong importance of maintaining vitamin D levels in the body. He says anytime those levels drop, “You put yourself at increased risk of potentially developing a malignancy later in life, because you’ve lost the policing ability of vitamin D to help keep cell growth in check.”
Diet alone isn’t always enough to provide the necessary levels of vitamin D, say scientists. As such, sun exposure and supplements are suggested.
The sun has long been suspected to play a role in promoting good health, but only recently have studies begun to understand the specific role of vitamin D in bringing about positive health benefits.
The article also mentions research pointing to lower melanoma risk among those who regularly work in the sun. For more information, visit the source.
