Imagine receiving a customer feedback card that used words such as “courteous,” “helpful,” “impressive,” “knowledgeable,” “articulate” and “competent” to describe your employees. Sounds pretty great, right?

One Open Small Business blogger explains his experience with water heater repair service with just those words. He was so impressed that he called the owner of the company to ask for his tips on creating such impressive employees. Here are a few of those tips:

1. Don’t just teach your employee how to blurt out a lotion sales spiel—selling to a customer is so much more than that. Show them how to be courteous, patient and helpful.

2. Compliment a job well done. When an employee first starts at your company, their confidence in their work is low because they are still learning. At this stage, it is important to compliment often. However, as they become more self-confident, avoid giving them an inflated sense of self worth by reigning in the compliments and emphasizing “improvement” accolades.

3. Show trust in your employees by giving them more responsibility. Let them help train a new hire or handle some tasks outside their usual scope of duties.
