The question of the year: How can small businesses spend less without compromising their products, customer service or operations as a whole? Here are several tips from the Small Business OPEN Forum:
1. DIY. Doing it yourself can save you bundles on everything from remodeling to marketing. A daily cleaning service can be cut down or out completely if your office is small.
2. Buy labeled goods for your office equipment. Labeled products often come with a warranty, because they know their product will last longer than a year – the same can’t be said for cheap printers or laptops. Don’t forget to work with retailers that will match competitors’ prices on everything from ink cartridges to office chairs.
3. Unplug. Save on electric bill by turning off lights when not in use and unplugging machinery not currently in use (all use electricity, even when turned off). Encourage employees to power down their computers at the end of the day.
4. Use coupons. Notice we say use coupons—don’t just clip them and stuff them in a drawer to forget about. Many stores send monthly deals for office products and groceries—plan purchases ahead to get the most out of these deals.
5. Bundle Internet, land line and cell phone packages. Shop around to find the best deal for your particular needs. Or call your current provider and ask what they’re willing to do to keep you as a customer—you might surprised.
6. Plan errands and jobs to avoid wasting time, gas and to cut down on wear-and-tear on company vehicles. Plan all activities to avoid driving across town more often than is necessary.
