As a salon owner, you may commonly advertise specials with flyers—if so, you must be aware that some of the common ways fliers are distributed are illegal. Associated Content provides a breakdown of laws that can affect the following common means of distribution:
Flyers on cars. In some local ordinances, anti-soliciting laws prohibit placing flyers on cars. And, since your contact information will most likely appear on the flier, you an easily be tracked down—and then fined for soliciting. In addition, if your flyers end up on the ground, you can also be fined for littering.
Flyers on the street. Without a license or permission, people cannot stand in a public place and solicit for business. The same fines for solicitation and littering can apply.
Flyers in mailboxes. It is against federal law for people to touch a mailbox that is not their own, unless they are an employee of the United States Postal Service and they are delivering mail.
Flyers on telephone poles. Telephone poles are considered privately owned property (either belonging to the city or the utility company that controls them) and are often protected by city ordinances or laws that prohibit posting signs.
