The goal in creating a salon Web site is to attract traffic—specifically, local traffic that you can turn into paying customers. Thankfully, attracting local searchers doesn’t have to be difficult; a recent CNNMoney article suggests focusing on three key things: content, search-engine rankings and design.
Content. The best thing to do is to consider what potential clients want to see on your site—such as location, hours and services. In addition, linking to useful resources can enhance your credibility (for example, a salon that offers sunless services could easily link to the Wikipedia entry on DHA) and providing your own information about tanning subjects—such as through a blog—will position you as an expert.
Search-Engine Rankings. Expanding the amount of content on your site will greatly help your search-engine optimization (SEO), because the articles and links will be full of key words that search engines look for when ranking sites. Also be aware that broken links on any of your pages will deter clients (this makes you look as if you don’t really care) and trip the search engine crawlers that read your site, which will negatively impact your rankings.
Design. Simply getting traffic to your site isn’t the end of the story, though—your site design will have a huge impact on whether you turn a searcher into a customer. First and foremost, your homepage is the introduction to the rest of your site, which means it needs to stand out. An aesthetically pleasing color scheme—two to three shades is best—and organized presentation (with clear indication of how to navigate to the rest of the site) are important.
