If debt collectors are hounding your business day and night to pay up on bills that are stacking up, you don’t have to take the harassment, says a recent article from CNNMoney. Here are several ways to get them to back off while you catch up.

Know if they’re operating legally. Collectors can only call between certain hours and cannot discuss your debt with anyone but you (or your lawyer, if you have one).

Don’t go GM. Don’t file for bankruptcy if you don’t absolutely have to. It can expensive and unnecessary.

Write and ask that they stop contacting you. Send the letter by certified mail so that you know it was received. They are required to stop calling. However, just because they’re not knocking on your door does not mean you don’t still owe.
