Purpose-driven companies—those for-profit companies that are attempting to help solve global issues ranging from pollution to poverty—top 30,000 and claim $40 billion in revenue, reports BusinessWeek.

While entrepreneurs have always been viewed as a key component to a prosperous economy, many believe that those entrepreneurs who have a social conscience and an intrinsically good motivation could be the future of heaving out of the current economical crisis.

Some of the top social entrepreneurs, nominated by BusinessWeek.com readers, include:

  • Academic Earth: Makes available for free higher learning lectures online. The Web site will eventually make profit through advertising.
  • Better World Books: This online bookseller has donated $5 million to literacy programs and libraries globally.
  • Big Belly Solar: This company’s flagship product is a solar-powered trash compactor, and is popular with municipalities trying to save money.
  • CleanFish: This company educates consumers and chefs about using small-scale fisheries to purchase from in order to be mores sustainable and to get better-quality fish. They also connect grocery stores and restaurants with these types of fisheries.
  • CraftNetwork: The company connects local crafters in third-world countries with retailers in wealthy countries.
