Employee fraud tends to rise during recessions as employees become financially desperate or disgruntled, according to an article in BusinessWeek. That fraud can range from abusing expense accounts to skimming funds and check tampering. As a result, many companies are turning to technology help avoid cases of worker fraud, in the form of monitoring and tracking software.
However, experts warn that, while technology can turn up suspicious activity, it shouldn't be seen as the only solution—a lot still depends on people (such as other employees) to notice any activity that's out of the ordinary and report it.
