In a recent CNNMoney article, the husband and wife founders of Amy’s Kitchen, producer of Amy’s Organic frozen foods, discuss the trials and tribulations of starting a business. Some interesting choices they made include:

  • To get the start-up cost (about $20,000) they sold some jewelry and coins, and borrowed against their car.
  • When that money ran out, and they were declined by bank after bank for a loan, they went to a small community bank. The loan officer remarked, after looking at their business plan, they would someday be the bank’s biggest customers. He was right.
  • When orders started streaming in, the couple found that they couldn’t keep making their pot pies by hand and keep up with demand. So, they called Swanson’s, the king of frozen-dinner companies. Sure enough, Swanson’s not only shared its process for manufacturing pies, but also helped the husband-and-wife team flush out a system that would work best for them.
