If you’re new to Facebook, MySpace or any of the other social networks, you’ll notice when creating a profile that you can upload tremendous amounts of information about yourself, from whom you voted for in the past four presidential elections to photos of yourself at the most recent neighborhood beerfest. It’s tempting to share all of this information, but doing so could lose you business—and defeat the purpose of even having a social networking presence.
Columnist Lesley Spencer Pyle for Entrepreneur magazine suggests safeguards to make sure your social networking presences stay professional, whether they’re for you as an individual or for your business. She also warns against spending too much time on social networking sites because they can be addictive. If you’re going to spend hours on end on Facebook, use them to do something productive, such as writing blog entries about the business and your products, creating fan pages or somehow promoting your enterprise.
