As online banking becomes increasingly popular, worries about account protection are growing due to phishing schemes and “cyberthieves” that try to dupe you into giving out your personal information. MSN offers nine tips for ensuring that you don’t fall victim to any of these Internet scams, including:

  • Always look closely at a bank’s URL when logging onto its Web site. A more secure URL will begin with "https://" and be followed by the bank name. Also make sure the bank's padlock is displayed in a corner of the site before logging on.
  • Don’t ever click on any links in a bank-related warning e-mail. Instead, call your bank and verify the message’s authenticity.
  • Use a different username and password for each financial account that you have online. The password should be complex, and include numbers and symbols. In addition, you should change your password regularly.
