Located smack in the middle of the tanning heartland, Paris, Tenn.-based Four Seasons Sales & Service has been serving the needs of the indoor tanning industry since 1984. Owners Ronnie and Johnny Allen are industry icons known for their dedication to the indoor tanning industry as well as devotion to the growth of their company.

Four Seasons has evolved into one of the largest distributors in the industry and has built a name for itself on sales, service and commitment to the salon owner. Today, the company is fully integrated with virtually all indoor tanning products, including lotions, parts, equipment and accessories. Its 60,000-square-foot headquarters features a state-of-the-art computer, telephone and shipping system, as well as any--and every--thing a salon owner needs to run a successful business.

Jennifer Stanfill, the company's marketing director, took time out of her busy day to speak to LOOKING FIT about Four Seasons' past, present and future.


Q: How did Four Seasons break into the indoor tanning industry?

A: Twin brothers Ronnie and Johnny Allen started Four Seasons in 1984 when Ronnie's wife, Ann, came to him with the idea of putting a tanning bed in her small beauty salon. After studying the idea, they decided to give it a try. Ronnie was so impressed with the positive response the tanning bed was receiving that he shared the idea of indoor tanning with Johnny. After much consideration and research, they both quit their secure jobs and ventured into the new industry of indoor tanning.

Q: How has the company evolved to meet the industry's changing needs?

A: Johnny Allen heard a saying a long time ago that has always stuck with him: "The only thing permanent is change." With that philosophy, Four Seasons continually is growing and changing to meet salon owners' needs by providing them with the best products and services in the industry. Four Seasons also endorses outside services that benefit salons. These services include U.S. Medical Plans, a health-benefit provider, and TFBN (Tan Friendly Broadcast Network), a music service dedicated to indoor tanning.

Q: What is the philosophy behind Four Seasons, success?

A: Our mission statement best describes our philosophy: "Four Seasons will remain the leader in the distribution of indoor tanning products through professional sales, service and innovation while maintaining integrity and shareholder value." It is our goal to assist in the success of salons and build a solid future for the indoor tanning industry.

Q: What exciting developments are taking place this year at Four Seasons?

A: We have several exciting announcements that will be released soon. You'll just have to wait and see.

Q: Your catalog is a huge endeavor. Can you tell us a little about product lines you carry and the service you offer?

A: The Four Seasons catalog has been the focal point of product information for the industry since its inception. Providing complete product information and manufacturer-supported programs is only our first step in presenting the best products to the industry.

Our extensive phone sales staff of 66 salon sales representatives, six parts sales technicians, 15 customer service representatives and six outside field representatives continue to process orders with the best service. All 93 individuals have successfully completed Smart Tan's basic certification, and we have nine individuals on staff who are certified trainers providing local support and training to our customers. We sponsor and participate in multiple seminars across the country focusing on education.

Q: Which of your products are the most popular?

A: Four Seasons is a national distributor, selling products all across the country. Our sales staff caters to the needs of each individual salon differently based on its needs. That's why we believe it is important to carry all types of products so salons can carry what is best and most popular for them.

Q: What do you want industry newcomers to know about Four Seasons?

A: Four Seasons has been the leader in distribution since its inception 19 years ago. We are a company that continually meets the challenge to give added value to our salon customers by offering the most innovative products, services and education.
