The following information has been provided by the ITA.
We chalked up a number of significant victories in state battles over the past month. Two bills calling for a teen tan ban in Maryland were defeated thanks to the hard work of Robin and Marty Eason (Sunseekers), Ryan Baker (Palm Beach Tan), and Russell and Penny Rice and Julie Barnhart (Tahiti Tan).
We also saw the Connecticut legislation fail to make it out of committee. The Connecticut effort was led by ITA board member, Karen Bentlage (Future Industries), Ed and Tommy Kelleher (Tommy’s Tanning).
Two Oklahoma bills, both containing age restrictions, also died in committee. As we move through the second quarter of 2010, there are 12 states that still have legislation pending, amounting to a total of 24 bills. It is interesting to note that two of the 12 states, New York and Pennsylvania, account for almost half of the bills still pending, including the proposed total ban on indoor tanning in New York.
