Suffolk County, N.Y. is considering new legislation for tanning salons following the news that tanning equipment has been moved to the top cancer-risk category by the International Agency for Cancer Research (part of the World Health Organization).

The proposed legislation would ban under-18 tanners and would include a first-offense fine of up to $500 for allowing minors to use tanning equipment. Subsequent offenses would result in a fine of up to $1,500.

A public hearing is slated for Aug. 18 at the next legislative meeting in Riverhead.

Currently, Suffolk County prohibits use of tanning equipment by those younger than 14 and requires parental consent for children between ages 14 and 18.
