A new study indicates that a lack of vitamin D may increase asthma severity in children.
The study, which was published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, looked at 616 children with asthma and assessed each for allergies, lung function and vitamin D levels. Researchers found that children with low vitamin D levels were significantly more likely to:
- Have had asthma-related hospitalization in the previous year;
- Have regularly used inhaled asthma medication; and
- Be dust-mite sensitive.
