Twitter was founded in 2007 as a 140-character social networking tool where participants keep answering the question, “What are you doing right now?” It’s a great way to keep in touch with loved ones, or to help build community—especially among you, your employees and customers.

Yet another tool in the arsenal of electronic methods of keeping in touch, the application has become somewhat of a celebrity of late—not just joining communities of followers, but also gaining applications among individuals and businesses. People have created ways to share videos and songs via Twitter, as well as using it as part of a weight-loss or stop-smoking program.

Whether rigged to turn on the lights in your house or just to see what customers are up to, Twitter can be a valuable free resource.
