Study: Vitamin D Deficiency May Increase MS Risk

A recent study indicates that a direct interaction between vitamin D and a common genetic variant (DRB1*1501) alters the risk of developing multiple sclerosis (MS).

The genetic variant has been linked to MS, and the study found that vitamin D-activated proteins bind to a particular DNA sequence lying next to the DRB1*1501 variant, in effect “switching” the gene on. Researchers say this suggests that vitamin D deficiency in-utero and during early childhood may increase the risk of the child developing MS later in life.
