According to research published in the Medical Journal of Australia, indoor tanning kills seven Victorians each year and causes 51 new cases of melanoma. Because of this, research authors are saying tougher national regulation of the tanning industry is needed.

However, Patrick Holly of the Australian Solarium Association says the researchers’ conclusions were based on out-of-date assumptions—basically, that the figures relied on by the study are no longer accurate because solarium use fell this year by almost half (due to new government regulations and the media attention surrounding the death of Clare Oliver).
